Team Intelligence

Team Intelligence is the collective problem-solving capacity of a group — how well a team thinks together. Research finds it depends less on the IQ of individual members and more on social sensitivity, conversational turn-taking, and the proportion of women on the team. It is a property of the team, not the smartest person on it.

The concept comes from Anita Woolley and colleagues' work on collective intelligence (Science, 2010). They found that some teams were consistently better at solving novel problems than others — and the difference was not average IQ but the quality of the conversation: who got to speak, whether members read each other well, and whether the team distributed its thinking. Team intelligence is collaborative cognition.

Why It Matters

If team intelligence is a property of how the team converses, then the lever for improving it is conversation. Distributing voice, reading social signals, taking turns, and including the people who do not naturally interrupt are all moves a manager can make this week.
